Giardia in Buntzen Lake
« on: June 09, 2011, 07:58:39 PM »

Can anyone confirm this?
Apparently there are people saying there has been Giardia (a giardia outbreak) found in Buntzen Lake?
Thanks for anything you can share.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what "Giardia" is?  Is this a girl's name, a disease, a type of fish?

Sorry, I looked it up. That's nuts!!!  So, it's dangerous to even touch the water?   I personally think they need to stop allowing dogs to swim in that lake in the summer time.  Whether or not if it's part of the cause.  I remember swimming in that lake a few years ago, and there was tons of dog hair floating along the surface of the water.   That is pretty much the only clean water lake we have anywhere in the Greater Vancouver area with a nice beach.

I  e-mailed a contact of mine at  the Frazer Valley Trout Hatchery, and they had not heard of any outbreaks.

Called the Gate house at Buntzen Lake and questioned the staff and they were very surprised to hear of any concerns, as the water is analyzed often and the most recent results were clean.

As do I, and I share your concerns, but most parasites are not a health risk to humans via wellcooked trout, and the Frazer Valley Trout hatchery are always on top of the situation, and would advise vehemently, if there were any possible health issues with consumption
of their product.

Giardia is also know as Beaver Fever.
Caused by animals defecating in the water so it would not surprise me with all the geese and ducks, etc.
Don't need to worry about it unless you don't cook your fish, and I wouldn't clean/wash them off in the water if it were true.
