odors and stored gear/tackle
« on: June 08, 2011, 03:01:27 PM »

Hi all,

hope everyone has been able to fit in some time on the water between playoff games! Quick question about storing your gear and tackle, and whether odors can latch on to them and negatively impact your angling success.

I live in a one bedroom apartment in New West, and needless to say, storage space is at a premium. I keep my rods and fly vest, as well as tackle for gear chucking int he trunk of my car. I use the trunk to transport other things, such as hockey gear, roller blades etc. I know that this is not the ideal place to store them, but I am curious whether any odors, or even just being kept in a stale environment could have any effect on my flys and terminal tackle? could the fish possibly be put off by this?

Use hockey deoderizing spray - there is some in a refillable pump bottle that I got from Cyclone's for my goalie gear and it works very well.  If you mist your gear with that, excluding things like rods/reels it should eliminate some of the smell.

with your flies, if you're worried about odors potentially absorbing into them and putting off fish;  if you're close to shore or tie the fly on in shore, before you use the fly, gently rub it in the lake's weeds and gently rub or rinse  the weed, mud or shore matter back off of the fly.  This will give the fly a super natural lake specific scent and probably mask or get rid of the odor in question.  not sure it will be THE difference or not, but I'm guessing it doesn't hurt.  or you could bring a little cup or something of the lakes bottom debri out with you in the boat.   Just make sure no mud or weeds or whatever is stuck on the fly afterwards, obviously.
Another suggestion is if it's real bad to try masking lures or flies with something like a little anise seed oil.
good luck!

related to this but are there any foods or environmental condtions one should avoid while fishing? I remember hearing somewhere that fish hate the scent of citrus and its never a good idea to eat oranges etc while fishing as the scent can get transfered to the fly.

Anyone know if this is true or other dont do's for storage or while on the water? What about other foods or bug spray? sunscreen? smoking? gasoline?

If your fishing in a boat, Never bring bananas or let anyone in your boat who has them in their lunch.  They are nothing but bad luck, the fishing gods will curse you.

But if your fishing for Dollies or Bull Trout, don't forget the pepperets.  Put a little piece on your hook and hold on.  A little trick I learned while living in West Central Alberta years ago.

--of the items you mentioned.. bug spray.. will eat your fly line and neoprene waders
--anything that is sticky like sunscreen etc even if it does not directly afect your equipment will attract dust, sand etc thus reducing casting distance and if you don't have expensive guides will wear them out like sand paper.
