Probably most of you are wondering where the heck is Dickson Pond?
Well, it's located about 20 kms west of Innisfail, Alberta.
Next question probably is where the heck is Innisfail?
Well, it's a small town half way between Calgary and Edmonton.
With four weeks here in Alberta, I decided to do some trout fishing to pass time after work.
Rivers here are muddy at this time of year so river fishing is pretty much out of question where I am staying.
With an ultra-lite rod, small spinning reel filled with 6# fluorocarbon line, I decided to hit a local trout pond for some late afternoon fun.
Dickson Pond is part of the large Glennifer Lake on Red Deer River and to call it a pond is an understatement.
It is at least 1 km long and maybe 600 meters wide.
So it is a very large pond stocked with rainbow trout.
Because it is a large pond with good supply of food, stocked trout does seem to grow well here.
I heard from a local that some do grow to large size.
I arrived at the pond at 5 pm and started to cast 1/7 oz yellow and red five of diamonds spoon.
These small spoons are very popular here in Alberta to catch smaller rainbows in lakes.
As I had already fished here a few times, I knew where the hot spots were.
On the second cast a feisty 10" rainbow trout hits the spoon and it is landed after a dose of fun.
As stocked trout in this pond are normally released at 5" size, from size and healthy appearance,
it must have been in living in the pond for a quite a long time and feeding well.
I fish my honey hole and within 30 mins, land three more nice rainbow of 10~11".
After resting for a while watching a flock of Pelicans feed on fish, I land my last rainbow of the day.
I pack up my daily limit of 5 rainbows and head home for a nice dinner of fresh rainbow trout.
Can't beat fishing for spring Coho at my local river, but it still was fun.
