Tidal Fraser River, October 13th 2011: Garry Point Park Dock
« on: October 13, 2011, 08:29:31 PM »

Grabbed some gear and headed down to Garry Point Park and was Happy to see the dock empty-not so happy to see the heavy current ripping along though I was a few hours early for high tide to have much effect on the current speed-poor planning on my part.

Also realised I'd brought too light a rod for the kind of heavy spoons needed but still managed to cover a lot of water effectively with smaller spoons and spinners.

Toughed it out in a cold wind for just over an hour with exactly one bump to show for my troubles.

No fish showing anywhere but that's not surprising-lots of people out walking/enjoying the fall afternoon great to see visitors and residents alike enjoying themselves.

Sounds of distant gunshots over the river were another reminder of what time of year it is and then I guess an Eagle spooked a large flock of Snow Geese-the sound was audible from a kilometre away good to see them around if only for a while.

That dock is the second noisiest place I've ever fished-the screeching from the action of the ramp rubbing on the dock itself was awful-good thing I'm already quite deaf.  ::)

Hi Dogbreath,

Thanks for the report.  Which dock are you talking about?  I'm kind of getting my bearings around the Lower Mainland fishing areas, and just need a little guidance.  At Garry Point there is Pajos, and across from Pajos is a sandy area, then heading west, the Needle, and then continuing to another sandy beach area, and then there is a dock that is closed off to the public.  Is there another dock?  I am obviously missing something.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance.  Cheers.  Joe

The big dock there is open to the public, but has a white fence that makes fishing difficult, although with a nice net I was able to get a few pinks from there.

I disagree that the fence makes fishing difficult-it's easy to get round the fence and fish in front of it.

Of course that means you're standing in a very dangerous place-steep wakes from passing  commercial vessels can rock the dock hard and pressure waves often leave the dock awash-all this where some of the fastest currents in the Lower Fraser run right in front of the dock.

I'm an old single guy with no significant personal attachments and a well developed sense of balance who doesn't care if he gets wet or is washed away to oblivion so it's fine for me but think carefully and never ever turn your back on the river-it's also easy to trip over the bollards that are used for mooring they're an added hazard.

If you're not prepared to put yourself @ risk don't stand & fish there.

How's the water clarity? Thinking about heading down there next week to chuck some blades.
