If you are in really slow moving water, like the canal, you probably will have good success with pencil only.

Split located lower in faster runs above the canal, keeps the hook a little lower where the fish are.

I usually go with option one, but sometimes, if done correctly a little swing can be deadly. Especially for aggressive coho, I have had many fish attack and engulf my roe on the retrieve as well.
