« on: November 21, 2011, 07:43:48 AM »

How do you do it and how often should it be done?

At least once a year for a bait caster or spin caster, more often if you use it a lot. I clean and oil my centerpin after every outing.

I do every couple of months, If you use it in the salt water do it more often. Look at the manual that come with the purchase of the reel or online. It will show you where to lube and grease.

In freshwater every couple of weeks.  If I use a reel in salt water every time I use it.

what type of reels- a bushing fly reel never needs maintenance (nothing to maintain, just rinse it), my levelwind reels get a full tear down between seasons.

I have a SAGE 3500 I think has  seal ball bearing, all you have to do is rise.

I serviced my baitcaster last weekend and it doesn't want to "free spool" at all even with the tension backed all the way off.  Any suggestions?

Clutch arm/release trigger miss-assembled?
Pull apart and reassemble.

What reel do you own? there are literally hundreds of models out there, so it's difficult to come up with a definitive answer without knowing what it is you have.  If it's an Abu, if Milo's suggestion wasn't successful, there's a really good chance you have an older Abu, with the dual white 'flyweights' (centrifual brakes), that are full out on their posts, getting squished by their retaining circle on the brake plate. This error is responsible for more frustration than any Abu glitch I'm aware of. Push those puppies in, folks. ;D
