Cowichan River, March 5th 2012

Heavy rain pounded down here in Lake Cowichan all night and I figured this was exactly what the river needed. Drove to the river and was happy to see no one there the water had come way up and was colored not the gin clear steelhead green it had been for the last few trips. One rod had a brass hammered colorado which had produced the last time out and the other was a single rubber egg and white wool combo. Fished the blade for about 30 min with no love so it was time to chuck out the second offering I decided to put on a light pink glow worm in the 4" size as the water was very cloudy maybe 2' of visibility. About 10 casts and nothing I was getting discouraged as I have no confidence in the pink worms and rarely fish em. And then wham float down hard and a quick tug to set the hook but nothing. Fished the hot spot for a while longer and no hits was starting to think the rain messed up the honey hole.So of to the trail to try all the productive water on the walk back to the truck. First spot about 3 casts the float dips slowly and I half hartedly set the hook and my float begins to travel up stream in the boulder filled run it is a fish I think to my self only to have it let go mear seconds after it travelled 5' up river. I'm starting to like this pink worm in the cloudy water condition and thinking it may actually produce some steel after all. I proceed to fish up river to another spot where a side channel meets the main run and there is a trough where I had hooked a few steel earlier this season so about 3 cast out and smack the float disappears and a line peeling run feels like a smaller sized steel on mt 10'6" shimano convergence armed with a shimano cardiff reel which I pack around as my back up as I normally fish the Center Pin. Weird playing a fish on this set up as I haven't played one on this rod in about three years. Any way the fish turned and came in relatively easily and was a beautiful resident rainbow this was it for my adventure today. Did manage to see a big buck which was on the mend just hanging out in a back eddy resting.
