Salmon expansion plans - the tricky way!
Fraser River Sockeye
From GSA
When is expansion not considered expansion? When open net-cage fish farms are concerned. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is currently considering applications by Marine Harvest for production increases for two open net-cage salmon farms that lie directly in the path of the outmigrating Fraser River salmon.
Now, this is not considered an overall increase in production, as the plan is to transfer licensed production from other farms. However, these farms haven’t been active in many years, so although on paper this looks like a transfer, it could in fact increase local production levels by 35%.
Shelter Bay and Marsh Bay open net-cage salmon farms are on the mainland shore across from the northeastern tip of Vancouver Island. In light of recent information presented to the Cohen Inquiry, it is simply outrageous that any increase in open net-cage salmon farming would be even contemplated, especially in an area where outmigrating juvenile salmon travelling between Vancouver Island and the mainland must pass.
