Lakes around Merritt, May 22nd - 25th 2012
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:45:30 PM »

Last week I had some good camping but that was about all as no fish to the shore but has some nice wilderness camping as only saw one person in three days. well saw a lot of mosquito's... ::)

Headed off to another area on Tuesday that Rodney recommend but I thought I was in the middle of winter as frost overnight. I saw no hatches so broke down and tried a flat fish and of all things a gang troll with a worm which I guess is as bad a flossing as took some ribbing from a well known angler who will remain anonymous after he found out I was fishing this lure of sin but at least I caught some fish and kept one to keep my wife happy. I helped a Go Fish Technician put in some fish and I did some filming and picture taking of the process. He left a wrench behind as was rushing off to any lake for another lib, so will get it to Steve or someone from the Abbotsford Hatchery

I decided to pull up stakes just as Rodney and Nina appeared but they took their time getting into the water as they were enjoying the warmth of my fire in sub zero temperatures with the wind. Others trying fly fishing had little luck and Rodney can say how he did after I left. :-\ Some motor bikes and quads also sent me on my way rather quickly.

Headed to lake 2 and got some nice video of a grouse on the way and almost got stuck in a bog of mud, will post this for now.

At lake 2 yesterday it was very windy so had a nap and set up camp. A chap came in late in the day with 2 nice ones taken on a flat fish tipped with a worm. He said the one he used was 15 years old and they do not make them any more.  I said I would look for one in my travels, even took a picture of it so I could match it up.

I took his phone number so I could get one to him if I found one and of course I would like one too.. ;D

As he rushed home for supper and as he left I noticed he had left his battery motor behind so having is number I phoned and left a message for him so he knew I had it.

Seeing these fish I headed out for a bit and fished for a couple of hours with the gang troll again :o and lost a nice one around 3 pounds at the boat.

I headed in at dark and the fellow had returned for his battery and told another camper it was a $400 one.

After a late supper off to bed and it was another cold night with frost in the morning but nothing a nice fire could not cure.

As I had to head to meet Gwyn at another lake I went out after a breakfast of french toast and once again the gang troll paid off with a fish close to 2 pounds. With 2 fish in the cooler I called it a morning and I headed in to break camp. Just as I got the Leaf Craft at shore the phone rang and I was distracted and stepped into 2 feet of mud, thanks Rod.

They were following me I guess and they arrived at bankers hours and once again enjoyed my fire. By this time The Master was out fishing with Dean, both fly fishing of course.

As I left Rod and Nina had their boat in the water as I bid them adieu. I hope they have good fishing but I observed very little bug activity and no casings, may too cold for a hatch.

Filed a radio report with 89. 5 The Hawk in Chilliwack as they wanted to do a news story about the garbage dumping in the Chilliwack River Valley.

I am off now to Lake 3 and promise not to use a Gang, well it is no bait anyway so will drag out the fly gear. A report how I do later.

You can always use a fly behind the gang troll. :) I actually did that last weekend at Ruth Lake and was into some big ones. The wind was bad though, so I just wanted some fish.

Just got in from 4 days away. Here is a couple of clips from today, Sorry our filming was not the best, either was our fishing handling skill, but we do no editing. :-[ Had a enjoyable day with Gwyn and fishing was good until the wind came up.

Rodney says I need a better camera too, maybe he should buy me on all the tips I give him... ;D

Look forward to his story and photos on his trip.  ;D I will write more on lake 3 later but 4 days of fishing is a bit tiring.???

Here are some more non-fishing photos from our trip last week. Non-fishing because no fish were harmed during the trip, nothing that impressive anyway. :P
