Started my day of hunting up top, the water looked good maybe 2 feet plus vis with a nice green look to it. Got the gear out of the Truck. Put on the waders and boots, got all my roe ready for the day and I was off. So headed down river along a trail, or at least what I thought was a trail on the high bank along the rivers edge, and before you know it... I AM HANGIN ONTO A BRANCH FOR DEAR LIFE, WITH A RATHER DEEP FAST RUN RGHT BELOW ME.
Yep, the bank gave way. But after inspecting the new wader and and new rod, (Funny how I was more worried about the rod and waders than I was at getting back up on the bank to safety.
) I pulled myself back up out of that, and found a new trail downstream.
Fished that first run for about 45 min or so, nice looking water, just no fish that I saw. So I headed back up river to another deep slot I had been looking at on the way down, and I see as I come around the corner there is already someone there.
But as I watch, he isn't fishing, just getting a drink of water, being that he was a deer and all. So I slowly make my way a bit further up the trail and what do you know, the little Buck comes out of the bushes onto the trail right in front of me. We must have eyed each other up for a couple min at a distance of maybe 10 feet. After making each other flinch a couple times, I was wondering what this Buck had planned, cause it didn't seem like he was thinking much about being on his merry way. So I fanned my vest out to either side and held my rod high out and front of me and did the best Fat bastard impression I could come up with," I'm bigger than you, get out of my way" and he finally turned around and wandered off the trail.
SO now that I have successfully scared off a little dear, I myself make a left turn and head to the river, down the bank feeling good about myself, cross a side channel and found out something, clay is very slippery. MAN DOWN...... AGAIN.
SO now I am sitting on my *** in about 2 feet of water, and just realized that my rod and reel took the load of the fall. So after sitting on my knees in this cold water for about 10 min, I have inspected the rod and there seems to be no damage at all, not even a scratch thank god...and gotten as much of the clay as I could out of the reel.
Still will need a better cleaning and lubing when I get home. Now that I have gotten myself up out of that water, I fish this run for about 30 min as well with not a touch. So now being that it was about 6:30 am. I decided to head down river a bit and see what else I could find.
As I made it down past Allison the water clarity wasn't so good, Tamahi area the same, maybe 8" and had that Glacial cloudy green tinge to it. But, I figured that I had caught a steely last year in similar conditions, so back out in the water with some roe and started drifting. About 10 min later, these 2 ugly buggers in shorts comes walking out and starts yelling at me...
I was thinking about throwing then in the river for beeking in below me, but they had some real nice pins.
Had me thinking, how do 2 fugly guys, who are obviously a couple, afford pins like that... Hmmm..... And it hit me. Gay porn.
Anyhow I shouldn't have said anything to them. cause I couldn't loose them after that and all they did was kept telling me how beautiful and awesome my rod was and asking me it they could play with it.
We found no fish where we were, so the Gay porn guys and I ( I was now starting to not mind these guys as much, with one sentence they taught me how to cast a pin!! Man, those pins were sweet and a pleasure to cast, At least I thought so as I had never really casted one before.) headed down river again. We fished a nice run. Ran roe, shrimp and whatever the taller Gay porn guy was using. He was a bit weird, kept telling me about young guys from his gym, then tried to mask it with the odd comment about the young girls that went there as well... Anyhow, totally creepy, you would have had to have been there.
While the tall one is weirding me out, the little one down river, is holding a little trout off the end of his line. After safely releasing the Smolt, he is totally pumped and celebrates by doing a most muscular pose and let out a rather girly giggle!!
The tall one and I both get decent hits but nothing turned up on hookset.
Being 12:00 now, and it was getting awful hot, I decided to call it a day and head to the gym as looking at the 2 freaks all morning made me realize that I must workout, or I could look like them!!
So in summary:
Don't fall on your fishing gear....... twice.
Clay is really slippery and after finding this out, it takes a lot of time to pick the clay out of your gear.
Doing a Fat Bastard impression may help you out at some point.
Don't talk to freaky old gay porn guys, you won't be able to lose them for the rest of the day.
Gear review:
The New rod (Stryker/Rainshadow), I loved it. Sensitive and has really powerfull hooksets. Can't wait to actually hook a fish using it.
The reel (Diawa Luna), worked like butter even after having been fallen on a couple times. Also held up well, one little scratch. Not bad.
Waders (Simms Freestones) Didn't over heat me at all, felt really comfortable and held up real well to being fallen on!!
Real good price point as well.
Boots (Simms G3 Guides) What can be said about these. They are bar none the most comfortable boot I have even worn. A ton of ankle support and heck they look awesome as well.
Just a bit pricey, but I think they are worth it.
Well, I didn't get a fish, but had a great time out, with some "interesting people" and some great weather. They skeeters weren't that bad at all either. I would easily take a fun fishless day over a hot day at work anytime.
Now I must be on my way, have to go pick up my tidal salmon tag and perhaps head down and wet a line again.
If you got through all this, then good job. It wasn't going to be like this, but then the beast just took off and well..... this is what I came up with!!
