Sorry but nothing comes close to deepfried pickled herring, my uncle brought me a jar from Germany about 15 yrs ago, was gone in an hour.

When we cleaned ours a few days ago, we found quite a few squid in their stomach cavity.

Mrs R must be coming up with good recipies ;D

not up on the ocean temps Rod, do the squid and mackerel normaly overlap in temp ranges and therefore competing with the salmo's food chain or even a double whamy with preying on the young and competing for food with the maturing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but dont Mackeral in our waters rely on water temp.

  Yup the mackerel usually follow the warmer Japanese current along the west coast of Vancouver Island. We used to catch them in our seine nets on certain years, sometime's the warmer water would send the sockeye runs down the inside passage pissing off the American commercial fleet as the fish would migrate thru the gulf instead of coming around the west coast when they entered the Fraser river.

This March, I caught dozens of mackerel in California in just 4 hours. They weren't very clean though. Even the cabzones have worms in their gills.
