Hi,

Im looking for a new fly rod for fishing mainly stocked lakes in the fraser valley (250-300g rainbows), and some small streams. Should I go for a 3wt of a 4wt?

Get a 5wt, then you can fish interior lakes as well.
It's not like the Fraser Valley catchables will put up much of a fight on a 3wt either.

I beg to differ I love my little TFO lefty 3wt for lower mainland lakes and streams.
The OP stated it would be used mainly for lakes in Fraser valley.

I also agree. A 3wt for local lakes and streams would be perfect.

I will say for down here, a 2 or 3 weight. I would actually take the 3 weight for the lakes, and take a 4 or a 5 weight for rivers and sloughs when cut throat hunting.

But Ive fished all over down here with a 5, 6, and 7 weight, and the only time that heavy of rod was needed was for Coho. 5 was light, but I liked the 7. The trout in lakes are a bit dull... maybe lethargic. They do not put up a BIG fight, and so a lighter rod will do fine. But I have found the cutties in the cold flowing water quite feisty. Have not managed to hit a bull yet, so I cant comment on those.

Another vote for this one! I have the 4 wt TFO Lefty rod and it is great. Can even take a little coho from the cap.

3wt for me too, just keep in mind that when the wind starts to blow the 3wt line gets tough to cast straight and even harder to cast far.  On the smaller streams it will be lots of fun.

I love my redington 3wt CT, its a great rod for trout up to 16" but i've got dollies up to 5 lbs on it to. The four would be better if your gonna be fishing in windier conditions.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have a 6wt and a 9wt, so looking for something on the lighter end for local lakes and stream. Im also looking for something I can use on the Skagit too.

Maybe a 4wt then?

I take my 5wt with me on the skagit mostly because I hike alot of water and fish bows on the way up and bulls on the way down.
It's kind of a compromise but beats packing 2 rods through the bush.
Theres some scrappy little bows in that river.

A 3 or 4 would be ideal for just bows on the skagit

Thanks for all the input. I settled on a Redington CLassic Trout 9foot 4wt, paired with an Okuma SLV reel and Rio Gold floating line. Pretty excited to try I out.

Great rod and casts far no problem, they also roll cast easily which is great river fishing.
