Lake Lice
« on: October 01, 2012, 02:08:56 AM »

I was fishing a local lake and i caught a few fish. In any event, the fish I caught this day had a considerable number of what looked like lice. What is the lake louse called? I tried to google it, but didn't get much for B.C. I remember reading about it in some interior lakes, but at the time only gleamed over it. I understand they are not particularly harmful to adults, is this true? Again any info would be appreciated. This is the best picture I was able to quickly snap.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.  Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Probably Salmincola, a parasitic freshwater copepod, but I can't really see the picture well enough. Relatively harmless.
Check out Tom Northcote's paper back in the 50's about fish parasites in BC, especially page 9.

Read through it, it was definitely Salmincola, so you are correct! Well done, thanks.
