Lower Mainland, September 30th 2012: Ho's on the beach
« on: September 30, 2012, 05:31:43 PM »

Went out in the sunshine today, well away from the crowds of the valley river.  Off to 'my' spot where I had success last year.

Weather was perfect, nice and warm.  I was out at mid afternoon, so not ideal, especially with the clear skies.  But I notice some active fish in the area, and a couple of seals, so I set off to casting.  First a croc, then a couple of blue foxes.  Couldn't get a bite after about an hour.  I think back to remember the retrieve and the colour/size that worked here last year.  Doh, orange blue fox.  I had no success on a pink body, nor chartreuse body.  So I tie on the orange one, second cast, BLAMMO, chrome bright Ho goes BALLISTIC.  A couple of passerbyes stop to watch the action.  I unbuttoned the barbless gammy from his yap and away he swam.

Feels good to get the first one, felt even better that the folks behind me watching the action snapped a pic and emailed them to me!

I lost that blue fox shortly after and tried a few other lures.  I was getting tired when I tie on a brass blue fox, a few casts later, BANG, fish on.  A nice bonus cutty of about 2lbs comes to hand.  A great capper on the day.

I was tired and hungy by about 4:30 so I headed home.

What a great September this has been weather wise, and a great way to end the month with my first Ho of the year and a cutty (first time in a long time I have caught one).  Glad to see them still around.

A good day.

This is not on the Fraser.  To be more specific, this fish was caught from the shoreline somewhere between Porteau Cove Provincial Park and Peace Arch Provincial Park.  ;)

My set up is nothing dramatic.  It is a Shimano Sienna 2500FB and a Shimano Sojourn 6'6" Medium/Fast 6-14lb.  To be honest, I am a bit outgunned on the rod portion.  I would prefer to have a 7-7.5 footer for better control and casting distance.  This is NOT an idea beach rod, by any stretch.

The funny thing was, there were a couple other guys working the area I was in, and they were making LOOONG casts.  I caught the two fish mentioned, and jumped another good sized Coho within 50 feet of shore.  They, as far as I could see, got skunked.   I must have made twice the number of casts they did and worked the spinner slowly right to my feet.  There were 2-3 boats working the area as well, trolling, I didn't see them get anything.

As we all know, sometimes the fishing is better right in front of you.  Even though I could see most fish jumping well out of my range.

Skunked today.  I won't include a weird looking mini lincod thing, a few bullheads and a little sole/flounder.
