Prawn Tails and steelhead - dying, brining
« on: November 01, 2012, 02:45:18 PM »

Anybody have much experience brining and dying prawn tails for steelhead? Do smaller tails sold frozen in grocery stores work? Do you brine them and if so are there reciepes for the brine? How about dying? I have been thinking of dying them with procure or Procure's bad azz dye.

i just sprinkle a little cure in a ziplock bag and toss them around. it doesnt take much to colour them up.
sometimes i put coarse salt in the bag to firm them up

night before with thawed I cover with cosher salt ( any salt ) for 3-4 hours , drain and pat dry, then I use putz red and or orange in a zippy bag couple of each, tried the purple last week at a suggestion of a merican, didn't work for me but has worked for some.
Hoping to slip the leash this weeknd , if it's fishable.  x=it's :)

I use the cooked ones in the ring cheapest ones at the superstore. Don't put anything on them just right off the ring. Works gear for me :) and no pink and stinky fingers lol

I just toss em in a ziploc with some pink or orange pro cure and and by the time the Prawns are thawed they're ready to go.
If I don't dye them,I find most of them end up in my belly.

Not that I was slaying them or anything, so take this for what it's worth.. but I did catch a few steelhead last year on jigs when I tipped them with little chunks of cooked prawn. Large size prawns, $8 a bag, 1 prawn equalled 4 chunks.

Point is, cooked worked. I know this makes me kind of a nancy, but I would really rather not have to deal with bright red dye on my hands in the winter.

I caught a couple of coho last week on a jig tipped with cooked prawn on the Vedder. My fresh chum roe/Pautzke's Red wasn't doing much that day, so I tried the only other thing I had in my vest.. worked. I guess cooked prawn worked for them that day too..

But back to your original question.. the guy at SeaRun told me to sprinkle a little Pautzke/procure in a ziploc with the prawns when i was fishing, said that's how he did it and it works great. I tried it once, didn't catch anything and really didn't like the mess.

Just straight up for me, no double redd hot here. Either they end up in the fishes belly or in mine. Been happy with the results so far.  :D :( ;) ;D

one thing that worked very well for me last year was using a color of procure, and on top of that i would also toss in a ziplock bag half full of my left over borax with all the nice roe smell on it.

seemed to add the right touch last year.
roe/prawn scent was the ticket. in a mesh baggie with a couple eggs and a chunk of prawn or just the stinky egg borax and prawn. either or did the trick. especially when you put a chunk on a bent rods jig.
