ICBC question about a car accident.
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:43:17 PM »

Hey all, I was wondering if you have to report anything to ICBC or anyone if you have a minor fender bender car accident? Just wondering what the rules were. I looked at the ICBC site and it only talks about reporting claims and such. Thanks

I don't believe there is any legal requirements, but you would be wise to do it anyways.

Thanks, It was a minor bumper at a mall. I got some scrapes on bumper but the other guy may make a claim ~ seem like the over-reacting type lol.

Ahh, I see. Well if it was your fault and you are worried about the spike in your insurance premiums you can pay ICBC outright and your premiums will not be affected. In the case of a small fender bender, this is usually an intelligent decision.

Your fault or his? If yours you could also have him get some quotes from a few shops then pay him cash in hand and ICBC doesn't even need to be called.

yup, if the guy makes a claim you can pay for the damages outright...but if he claims injury you're required by icbc to bring your car in to fill out a report even if you agree to pay for car damages.

From my experience in the auto trade it is safer to go through ICBC and just pay them.If any problems or conflicts after u just go back to ICBC.

Go through ICBC

Had a minor bump several years back, the other driver said lets just fix our own cars and not involve ICBC. Sounded great...I fixed my own car by picking up parts at Ralphs and did not involve ICBC....cost me about $300 bucks for parts. Several weeks later got a notice from ICBC to pay half of the other guys bill or expect an increase in my insurance because he went through ICBC and admitted 50/50...my portion of his bill was $650. Lesson learned!

Yup good advice. Never give anyone any cash either. If you are dead set on not going through ICBC get 3 or 4 quotes on the other persons vehicle. Than have that person bring the vehicle into the shop and you just pay the shop so you get a copy of the work order/receipt.

That's what I meant, not just give him cash and call it even lol

Sometimes, minor turns major...you might want to call ICBC. I hate them but people like to embellish the truth sometimes.
