wading boots repair
« on: November 08, 2012, 05:07:32 PM »

Any one can point me to a shop which can replace the felt sole of wading boots with reasonable cost? I approached a shoe repair shop in a mall about it and the guy told me I need to buy the felt sole from a tackle shop and then he will charge $40 for the replacement. That would easily make it $60 or $70+ and not worth the effort. Thanks.

First of all, congrats on being able to wear out your felts before your boot fell apart! Do it yourself dude! Buy the felt and some contact cement, the trick is to clamp down the felt tight against the bottom of the boot(the one time i was lucky enough to replace my felt,) I used c-clamps to accomplish this and let dry overnight. Good to go!

Thanks for the advice, Dennis. A lot of walking for steelhead caused more and faster damage to the felt bottom than the body of the boots.  ;)

Another question since you have done one yourself, if the felt is not totally worn to the  bottom except the heel area, then do I need to remove the old felt first and if so how did you remove the old felt?

My boots felt was stitched to the boot, so I had to use a knife to get it started on one corner.
After that just pull with a pair of pliers and keep popping the stitches with your knife as you go along.
That and some elbow grease should do the trick.
Take extra care preparing the boots sole before putting the new felt on. Make sure there is no remaining felt left behind.
After it's all clean I sand the boot a bit to rough up the surface.
And make sure your boots are completely dry before you glue the new soles on
