** I just started out on the pin this year, a few tips that helped me have some degree of success :

buy a large spool of cheap line... I re-spooled a bunch of times, sometimes 2-3 times a trip.

side cast to start...i dont think it's worth it to start off on anything else.

start with small casts/heavier weight.

Why so many re spools? Is center pin more prone to birds best than level wind??

Yes. ^^^

There is no drag system on a cp so you are responsible for stopping the reel from spinning with your hand when your line hits the water. It takes some practice to get the feel of it and get your timing down. Rats nests are part of the learning process and you WILL get them. I've fished a cp for 10 years now and still get them when I'm casting to a spot that is on the edge of my max. casting distance.
