Chilliwack River, Christmas Day 2012
« on: December 25, 2012, 10:32:10 PM »

Before you get excited... I got skunked today.  In fact I haven't had so much as a sniff during my last three steelhead trips.  But the river has been fantastic nonetheless.  After dislocating my ankle and fracturing my leg last January, I was unfit to fish for the whole season.  However, I've been out three times this past week and have found that my resolve to chase steelhead is stronger than ever.

After the customary opening of the presents (got some great tying materials),  I had some breakfast and coffee when my wife asks me to walk the dog.  I figured it'd be a great opportunity to introduce our 8 month old pup to the river (and do a bit of fishing as well); hopefully she'll eventually become a regular fishing buddy.  We named our puppy "Hrudey", after a combination of Rudy Huxtable, Rudy Ruettiger, and Kelly Hrudey.  Our reasons for naming her this are very convoluted and I'll save you from them...  But, for her first time on the river Hrudey did very well.  She stayed with me for the most part and regularly checked back in with me when she did wander off for a bit.  The only problem I had was with her constantly chewing on old salmon carcasses and running away with them when I'd try to take it away.  Does any one have any tips for training a dog to be a good fishing partner, or opinions on what characteristics a good fishing dog should have?  I assume chewing salmon carcasses isn't one of them.

The river is in excellent shape and good luck to all of you who plan to participate in the steelhead derby tomorrow.

Happy Holidays,
Fisherama and Hrudey

Hey Spencer, mostly fishing gear right now.  I did pull the starvation stick out about a month ago but my technique is as bad as ever.  Let me know if you're looking for company on the river some time this year, even if it's on the fly and I'll try to keep up!

You have to train to the dog not to do things you don't want him to do.
I have 2 dogs that go fishing with me when the weather is not too wet.
My poodle loves to roll in anything that stinks for sure and haven't been able to train him not to do it.

In the beginning when I had one dog and he was very young it was difficult to keep him close by and it did take a lot of my time on the river. I wasn't catching as many fish, let me tell you.

If I were you, I would train the dog to walk with you off leash first before bringing her to the river. Unless you don't mind catching less fish.
Or bring a long leash so the dog will have some space but can't walk away.

When I got the second dog it was even more difficult to keep them from straying too far.
They were constantly goofing around together further and further away.
But as they grew older they became better at being within an eye shot.

Poodle types are very outgoing and will want to greet everyone which can be a pain sometimes.
Train the recall well and make sure the dog will also come back to whistle. I have a particular way I whistle to my dog and they will hear it far away and come back.
Whistle sound carries far. Also have treats with you.
Good luck,
You're gonna need it  :D

Thanks for the heads up!  :D and good call on the whistling, she responds to that.  Although if there's a distraction, usually another dog or cat, she's pretty much hopeless...  need to work on that.  Sounds like I have my work cut of for me, but it's a good time to train her while I'm not catching much anyways ha!
