Chilliwack River, December 31st 2012

Made it out for first light yesterday on the lower river to find loads of people.
After losing a bunch of gear in some woody areas I moved to another spot and was quite pleased to see a guy with a large hatchery buck at the beach. At least there are fish around.
I fished through that run and down to the next. First cast against the trees, drift, and float goes down. I set the hook and feel some very deep, strong head shakes. No problem, I think - no logs in the water, no other fishers within 100 yards of me. The fish runs about 100 feet downriver, turns abruptly then runs past me upriver before sitting about 40 feet away and rolling.
I apply a bit more force and it jumps - I see the huge tail and an adipose fin.
The large wild buck comes to hand, and as soon as I give slack on the line the hook popped out.
The fish is sitting in 6 inches of water and I only touched it with my bare wet hand to carefully release it.

I then re-rigged my terminal tackle and casted to the exact same spot. Identical drift, same depth - my float reached the exact spot from the last fish and dives under. I set the hook hard, expecting to feel the head shakes again, only this time only a hard snag. That one had me going.
