Just read, thanks for posting, this just shows if we did not have people like Alex expressing concern about ocean located FF's this paper most likely would never have happened. Maybe progress is being made.

Have a read.......

Thanks for posting.

The only statement in that report that gives wild salmon some hope of survival.... according to Ruth Salmon, executive director of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance. “The industry would look at operations elsewhere if that (removal of ocean feedlots) were mandated,” she told the committee."

The most ridiculous statement: by Mary Ellen Walling, executive director of the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association. “Closed containment is trying to fix a problem that may or may not exist,” she said." However that's the closest she's ever come to admitting the feedlots are a problem.

--who said closed containment has to be at the same scale as open pen?
--what happened to a cottage style industry popularized by the 100 mile diet.
--why not grow fish for Calgary near Calgary..

--If we're going to jump into closed containment we should be proactive in solving problems of the land bases system.
--A small land based production facility near Oliver has brought to the forefront the lack of knowledge and legislation required to accommodate these facilities...
--Some examples... lack of legislation around extraction of ground water.. regulations regarding safe discharge of water volumes
--There are likely technical fixes such as recycle of water and various filter and strain systems to prevent disease transfer etc. but if we are going to push for land base we should be preparing for it to happen.
