Starter Fishing boat
« on: March 10, 2013, 10:10:22 PM »

I just moved to Tofino, and I want to get a boat to mostly fish inshore and sometimes go out further if the conditions allow me to. The problem is, I have been mostly a river fisherman, and I am not well versed in boats for the ocean. I was hoping to get some advice on what would be a good starter boat that wont break the bank. I plan to troll, but will be mostly bucktailing. As well I will be going to get some tasty rockfish.
I am looking for any help/advice in the specifics that I should be looking for. Some great help would be to list specific boats that I can look up, so that I can get a visual.
I really appreciate all the help.
Tight lines,
Brendan

What are your budget, storage and tow vehicle constraints?

If ya do not want to break the bank check out used boats for sale.
Do your homework as ya do not want to do a fix up job. ( $$$ )

Nevertheless buying new has it's big time benefits.
It is your pride & joy.
Ya stated you will stay near shore but at times venture farther if conditions are good, so my #1 sujj. is a 17 ft Arima.
For a 17 footer it really is the biggest small boat in my opinion.
I've got a 15'11" & am amazed how much more boat a 17 ft Arima is.

Also ya can check out the alum. Silver Streak with a HT.
Vancouver Is. Boat maker.
Or how about a 18 ft Double Eagle. Tested & proven. They built boats here in Richmond for so many yrs but moved the co. in BC's interior.
Vancouver boat dealers carry them.
So many worthy BC boat makers.

Win the lottery & I'd have min. 3 boats. ( maybe 5 )
One interesting boat is a 17.5 ft Warrior boat sold in the UK. ( over seas )
You tube has some vids on them. Unique designed boat & hull. ( not to be mixed up with the USA Warrior built boat )
Another very interesting boat is the 19 ft Sea Breeze ,a eastern design.
Very sharp hull at the bow, with reverse chines & "get this" a keel !!!!!

If ya go to Bridge Yachts Ltd. "boat sales" (New Dover, Ontario) website click on "new boats".
Then click on Sea Breeze.
2 boats will come up.
One is a loaded demo boat that was used by Italo Labignan on TSN's Canadian Sport-fishing Show.
90 Yamaha
Trailer cover
Bow cover
Cannon down riggers
Fishfinder
Rod holders
Etc...
Check out all these boats on You Tube for very interesting viewing.

The OP hasn't been back on the forum since he made this post, his first ever.

I would think he won't be back to check these answers any time soon.

I actually just got back in to town late last night from a business with little internet access.  I want to say thank you to A-Boater for all your help, as well as Bandit420. This gives me the info I was looking for to start out. Really appreciate it guys.

Happy the info helps.
( www.stolenboats.ca) When ya decide to get a boat I'd sujj. ya secure it well.
Chain,wheel lock,etc...

Here are some super boats but they are made in Australia.
The smallest model is called a Tuff Tender.
They are really light as two people can lift it & carry.
Special " chemical " added to this all polyethylene made boat has shed off 22 kg on this tender.

It is also a super small fishing boat. Basically unsinkable.
The hull design makes it such a stable boat.
There's a pic of 3 men standing on one side & it does not flip !!!
Takes a 2hp to 15 HP  or electric troll outboards or ya can just row it.

Check out the super article " New Lightweight Dinghy From Polycraft Boats" by Yacht and Boat.

Also type in Polycraft Boats in Google & click on "images"
Will bring up a lot of pics.

Of course ya can go to the web site : Polycraft.com
See all the various models.
I think a lot of us here in BC ( on this site ) would really love this  Tuff Tender model.
Super for fishing.
Super stable.
3 can sit in it.
Light enough to be a car topper or put in the back of a pickup truck.
( or have a very small trailer )Weighs 68 kg.

The older Polycraft Boats are heavier but the recent boats are a lot lighter but as durable & same quality.
The cost of this small fishing boat is between ( from what I picked up ) $2000-$3000.
Maybe worth the delivery from Australia to BC Canada !!!!
Really looks like an exciting boat for BC lakes.

Brendan ya would need a larger model in the Polycraft Boat line & it would be too costly to transport to Canada I guess.

But I hope you all will check out these Polycraft Boats from "down under."
Human beings are using their brains to create very good products & this has to be "right up there" as far as the WOW factor !!!  :)

Edit in update: with the new resin they use to make the boats lighter also has lowered the price. Sujj. retail something like $1650 to $1850 ...
In Australia dollars assumed so what's that in Canadian dollars ???
