Another great turnout this year. Two dozen volunteers turned out for today's cleanup. Total collected was 5200lbs. We split off into three groups; one group headed into the upper Squamish, another the upper Cheakamus and the third stayed on the lower Cheakamus. Volunteers also walked about 4km of river between the bridges that isn't accessible by road.
We picked the low hanging fruit last year and collected the heavy, but more-easily extracted junk at the sites that had built up over decades. This year we had to walk a little further away, and even chop up a car to extract it. We were able to complete the cleanup of one of the sites on the banks of the Cheakamus. I'd estimate we have pulled out about 12,000lbs over the last 3 years. This year we were able to take it down to bare earth.
Big thanks to everyone who came out despite the forecast, to Squamish District for providing gloves and bags and waiving tipping fees as well as to Sunwolf and Fergie's Cafe for letting us organize our cleanup there (and cooking up some great food before and after the cleanup. Hope everyone who came out had as good a time as I did.
