Capilano River, June 8th 2013
« on: June 09, 2013, 01:45:20 AM »

Made a late trip to the Cap. The hatchery has some fish in the holding tank and the fish ladder. Cable Pool does not have the large school of fish like last year. Didn't fish there and headed down to the lower river to fish the rising tide. Not too many people there. Surprising for Saturday. Saw no fish taken and no fish jumping or rolling. Where are the fish? It is now closing on mid June and it is a high tide (almost 15 ft) around late evening and not a fish in sight. This year is definitely a slower year than last year.

The previous reports from Hotrod regarding the seals may lend some insight to why fish aren't coming up.  I had never really considered them a factor but it makes sense.

There are definately not a lot of fish around. I recall, usually the river is loaded with coho by this time. Yesterday I saw a seal chasing salmon around and chased it right up on shore. By the time he came out of the water for it , an eagle swooped in to steal it from him. Some days there are a dozen seals blocking the way for the salmon, some days none! So weird, but I hope they show up soon on a more consistent basis.Poor ocean survival rate may be a factor here. :((

I've been out 6 times in the last 9 days and although there is the odd one around it is definitely a slow, slow year. Usually I would of landed a dozen by now but only have 4 to speak of, hmmm. Seals, human's, mother nature or just God testing our perseverance but whatever the reason for the delay I just hope they hurry the Hell up !!!

Wow Athezone, 4 fish is still very good compared to most of us. LOL. You are surely a Cap specialist. Congrats. Will have to go on a trip with you to learn some trick from a Cap pro, much like what we did last time in Hope.
