Non-tidal Fraser River, September 16th 2013
« on: September 17, 2013, 11:12:34 AM »

My father lives up in the interior and every two years for the past 12 years we have met up in mid-September around Agassiz for a day of flyfishing pinks.  Each time with little effort (and minimal skill) we would land easliy 20 pinks each and often more.  Yesterday we met up and fished hard to land 8 fish between us and we hooked up with only another 8 to 10 more.  There was a fraction of the fish you wouldnormally see in the river.  In the past there would never we a time you could not see at least one roller on the river.  Yesterday there were long periods with nothing.  Not sure where the fish are but they are not in the river I know that much.

If you look at some earlier posts from some of the fishermen who were out on the Fraser, you will see that FN had their nets out over the weekend. That is where the fish that would have been in your area ended up.

I was out in Richmond yesterday and there were lots of commercial trawlers scooping them in. They were all laughing so loudly with excitement as they were hauling up full net load each time. That being said, I was still able to land one and lost two within a fairly short time. One thing I noticed was that they were all jumping like crazy out in the middle of the flow, beyond any casting possibility, but a few did venture in. I think with the temperature cooling down, the fish simply shoot up river as fast as they can and not hang around perhaps because the warm weather has stalled them long enough. Just MO and not an expert, so please don't challenge me on this.

I spent the entire weekend fishing the Fraser River up that way, there were beach seines working in the area as well but I still saw 1000's and 1000's of fish go by, we couldn't keep them of the bar rods {pinks}and they were bumping into the line and making the bells ring all bloody day. When we switched for a change and took the fly rods out our arms were sore in no time.

Between the woman and myself over the two days we managed 3 chinnook to the beach on the bar rods but lost a couple doozies that I'm guessing were close to 30 plus lbs, our biggest was 27, smallest was 16 and one was red {score !!}that was roughly 18.......I guess you were obviously in a certain spot where the fish weren't but they ARE in the river....by the millions. ;)

My lady was using a very large spinning reel as she likes those the best, I myself was using an old mooching reel so there was definitely that beautiful "sound" happening.... ;) ;D
