Deer Lake, October 14th 2013
« on: October 14, 2013, 08:58:07 PM »

I went to Deer Lake to do some fishing from the shore. The water condition was poor: fresh explosive diarrhea, green smoothie, and Campbell's beef broth from the can all mixed into one lake is the best description. Also, there was a ton of underwater vegetation which was probably caused by the fertilization from the bird/duck poop. Due to the yucky conditions, there were no other fishermen in the entire lake! However, the lake was filled of boat users and I had to be careful of my casting.

I caught two largemouth bass in total in 45 minutes of fishing.

During the first 20 minutes, I landed a skinny 5 inch largemouth and it didn't turn any heads from the park users.

Fifteen minutes later, I caught a fat 15 inch largemouth bass which didn't fight too hard; it didn't jump and it just did some lazy flopping around. I have to say that the stocked rainbow trout fight much harder than these largemouths at Deer Lake. The fish had classic largemouth colours of green and light brown and there were about a half dozen people taking photos of the fish. They were just shocked to see fish existed in the disgusting looking water conditions.

Jack, what kind of reply is that?

If you're wondering, swimming isn't even allowed at Deer Lake for over 2 decades!

I rented a canoe a couple of times this summer and paddled my way to the middle.  The water condition is pretty clean and clear if you were near the middle of the lake.  The sides have too much vegetation, which might be good for the fish to hide but looks and feels dirty.

Shawn604,  if you read the posted sign, it's a protected area for wildlife and access is closed to all trail users.

Then you don't know where I'm talking about because this spot is a beach that many people use it has a sign and everything, I've been fishing that spot for years. I'm be vague, if you've walked the entire lake then you will find spots better then the cess pool at the floating dock. I'm not here to ruin wildlife or anything, thanks.

As the water cools down more and more the vegetation dies off and Deer lakes water clears considerably.Deer Lake is quite shallow so it heats up considerably in the summer and the vegetation really grows, and it takes untill mid fall to clear up. The worst area is right at the parking/beach/wharf area where the waterfowl tend to congregate looking for handouts. I have had exellent fishing days for trout in the spring and later on in the fall when the water is clearer and the vegetation is only around the fringes. I always fish from my pram so I get away from the floating wharf/beach area and get out into cleaner water. Deer Lake is much larger than the other urban ponds and is surrounded by parkland insted of housing etc.. and launching any type of water craft is a breeze, as there could not be better access. It is as central as it gets, and is doable for transit users. It just has a period in the year(summer and early fall)
when its warm temperature does not make for as good fishing.
