Tidal Fraser River, October 27th 2013
« on: October 27, 2013, 07:35:32 PM »

Back at it today (27th) since the weather was glorious and I need to use up the roe. Fished a couple of hours before high tide, same spot as yesterday.

Landed a 7 lb wild coho, and saw about five fish landed today plus a couple throw the hook. Still not much chum activity and today the roe fishermen seemed to have bettered the spinners by a fair margin.

The guy next to me walked up and checked on a couple of fisherman who landed a decent sized 'hatchery' coho. Long story short, they had cut off the fin and it was bleeding but insisted it was a hatchery. We called the DFO but they didn't show, understandable as there a lot of water to cover but to be honest, I've never seen a DFO yet in Richmond in all the time I've fished. It's not really a deterrent here.

It's a shame the minority have to spoil it, all in all I've found the vast majority of bar fisherman to be honest, friendly and helpful (eg sharing their roe when they are catching and you aren't?) but some people will not follow the rules unless there is a concrete price to pay.

Absolutely shameful behaviour. Back in the day when one could keep a hatchery steelhead at the Capilano I came upon a fisherman walking up the stairs at the Cable Pool with a black bag that obviously held a fish. I asked him what he had caught and he showed me. It was a wild steelhead that had its adipose fin cut off. I even ran my index finger across it and showed him the blood and he just shrugged and walked away.

I questioned him as I followed him out to the parking lot but he wouldn't say anything more. He just loaded the fish in his trunk, backed up and drove away. I had written down his licence plate number and phoned dfo but they said as he had already left there wasn't much they could do which I understood. I still to this day shake my head about this. Does anyone really need a fish that badly that they would stoop this low and dismember a wild steelhead.

I'm happy to hear that you had a fun afternoon catching coho besides this event. I must force myself to try the Fraser shoreline one day but I always end up at the Vedder, lol.

Thought I would just add to this thread for the date but not fishing same area. Fishing out here in Langley on Sunday late in the day for a few hours till dusk. Wasnt too optimistic because dont usualy fish a high tide but no choice and wanted to get out to this spot that I have not been out to much yet. The blessing was the clarity of the Fraser River water. You can see in the photos how nice it is and has been for past week.
Jacks were more the theme with 5 landed and 3 lost. I did get the one larger to one to hand, lost another of similar size that was chrome and also fought a hog of a buck for a while. This one banged my lure twice giving me the impression I was bouncing bottom until it finally grabbed and took off. This one just ran with a wake behind it but stayed low and not coming to surface for me to see. It did this during the whole fight with my light 7' rod trying its best to get him up for a view. I finally had no choice but to really put some pressure on him because he was heading for some structure. Up he boiled to reveal himself and a couple turns later ... off he went. Big boy for sure !!
The other surprise was the trout in pics. Its not uncommon for me to get 10" one if there are anywhere near my lures inthe areas out here but this was a nice find. Although I did not get a measure at the river, I measured my finger spread reletive to the pic and this one was an honest 15 -16" .
Am looking forward to the beginning of this week before weather turns.

Nice catches. Congrats. Thanks for sharing your catches. Spinner magic. I wish my spot around Port Mann can produce like that. LOL.  ;D
