Stamp River Report?
« on: January 09, 2014, 08:28:42 AM »

Anyone been lately? I drifted the lower (I use that term liberally) on Dec 30th and it was as low as I have ever seen it. Scraped up the bottom of my pontoons pretty good. Saw one summer run jumping around at the falls pool and a school ~10 tomato red coho just above the bucket but no winters to be seen or had.

I have a guided trip late next week and am on the bubble of delaying it for a few weeks if this rain does not pull them in.

Thanks. Chatted with Mike yesterday. Good to see a report in writing though.
Anyone outside of the guide community have any comments?

Our annual guided trip was dull on dec 28/29th. In the lower river you could walk in places we usually drift over. Even cross the river in spots. On day two we fished the upper, it was marginal, only coloured summer runs and old coho hooked. Even an old sockeye bit!! With the rains now it must be much better, always love to visit the area and feast at the clam bucket though.

It's sad. The stamp has gone totally down hill the past couple years. Fish are not showing up when they should be. A river the size of the stamp should still have fish trickling in regardless of low water, yet the river is completely void besides the occasional fall and summer run and some left over salmon.

Even with this rain, the reports I heard from my buddies the last 2 days have not been good, quite a few skunkings all around.  The river has come up over a foot already, to an easily fish-able level. According to my diaries, right around this height always fishes well, yet no fish are showing up. I'm really hoping that it's not another bust year.

Here's hoping it gets better...

Was there on the weekend and was very surprised to see no fish around! I am with every day on this one. The river is as low as I have ever seen it, but there still should be fish showing up and they are just not coming in. This river system needs the week of rain we are getting right now and by the end of next week it should be a lot higher. I would keep that trip at the end of next week, at least it will be more fishable and the thrill of the hunt comes into play.
I also drifted a different river a few days ago, as well, and the same story,........ low and no fish around!

Thanks for the input gents.

We have decided to give it a go as all the indicators look good. With the rain this week, the big dump supposedly coming tonight and full moon next week it should be as good as it will get this season. Even if it is lean at least we get a couple good dinners and can recharge the batteries. Love the Clam Bucket and will try the Schnitzel House.

been fishing it everyday, water is up but still really low by January standards, still very few fresh showing,IMHO not really worth the trip over at this time till it improves drastically, hopefully not another bust year like the last

Maybe it is true what the are saying about Fukushima and that it is poisoning the Pacific Ocean. Could have a lot to do with the poor returns. Time will tell.

Remember the Margarine advertisment.  "DON'T SCREW WITH MOTHER NATURE". Hatcheries are not the answer. The more we screw with Mother Nature, the worse it gets.

Stamp is blown out big time, less than a foot of vis and a coffee colour. Lots of rain throughout the day too.

Fished the little river thinking there would be some fish in it. Saw way more guys than fish (actually, it kinda felt like being on the Vedder). Actually, I didn't see a single winter run the entire day, when there should have been a bunch compared to what I have experienced in the past. Guides were even up on the little flow looking for them. Didn't see a single hook up, didn't sight a fish, nothing. At this point I have my mind made up that it's indeed another bust year for the Stamp. I was going to go out tomorrow, but it's not worth the drive or the time.

Went for a drive to kill some time before last light... you know it's bad when there are 8 guys up at Great Central Bridge trying to get their fix on summer runs....  :o  ::)

I guess I won't fish it then. Maybe I'll just go for a motorbike ride instead.  ;)
