Cool report, Rod.  Never tried starry flounder before, they look a little like halibut in appetizer form!  lol

Great reading Rod!  I fish that area regularly and I'm surprised that more people don't give it a try.  You can fish it all winter and rainy days when trout fishing isn't likely to be productive. 

Sometimes you'll get surprises too.  I caught this guy on a cold, rainy day while I was crab fishing.  Released of course.

Hundreds…. Come on now FA… ;D

It's a fascinating fishery even for adults in my opinion. There are up to a dozen flatfish species which inhabit BC's saltwater. Identifying them is no easy task, hopefully we'll be getting more species next time to show the differences in photos and videos.

Oops, the crabs all mysteriously disappeared in the kitchen before the invitation went out… ;D

Nice fish. I remember catching flat fish up to four or five pounds (rarely, granted lol) off the rocks at Belcarra up until a few years ago. Was a blast, not that I'd want to eat anything out of there.  ???

Was wondering what type of Flounder that was. When we hit Ambleside a while back we saw three otters head out fishing in formation from the rocks. Two came back with nice Starry Flounders. Here is a shot of Aaron beside one enjoying his lunch. We got skunked, but was pretty cool to watch these curious little guys do what they do.

Pretty common for them to feed on flounder. I found this one a few years ago on the rocks near where you were fishing.

Back in Nova Scotia it was common practice to use a long handled spear and a dory to fill a boat with flounder.

I saw an otter run up onto the bank from the water the other day while walking the seawall. I went down to take a closer look, the otter saw me and dropped the little kelp greenling he was holding. I returned the fish to the water but it didn't look very happy...

Otters these days, such poor fish handling etiquette  ::)
