Vancouver Island trip
« on: June 23, 2014, 09:26:42 PM »

Hi all,
I'll be visiting the island in early July this year. I will be visiting the Cowichan bay/river area for a few days. Is there any good fishing in Cowichan bay right now from shore? Also, I may need pointers on the trout fishing in the Cowichan as I have yet to really fish trout that much. I will be going to the provincial park there so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

If you are trout fishing the Cowie, you would be better off trying the upper section of river just below the lake,be aware the river is usually pretty low at that time of the year .Stonefly patterns work really well on the Cowie, check with Cowichan Fly and Tackle for the latest reports

On foot the Cowichan is your best bet - fish the upper river above Skutz falls as there isn't a lot of trout below the falls. Check the regs as there are tackle restrictions - fly only on much of it.

Your 3 wt should be fine for the bows and browns.

As others have said, above skutz falls will be your best bet for trout, closer to the lake will have more than further down. I haven't fished the cowy much, but I did really well in the few times I fished it with an olive green pumpkin head that had some flash for the rainbows. The browns like to go after large natural coloured intruder/bugger type flies. Olive is probably your best bet with some flash.

Is the fishing good closer to skutz falls? I might not be able to go much farther upstream than skutz falls.
