Profits elusive in direct farmed salmon business

Meanwhile, a second report from Bloomberg examining investment opportunities in the farmed salmon industry suggests these environmental issues translate into financial risk.

Says Bruce Kahn of Sustainable Insight Capital Management, “What’s been challenging for the [farmed] salmon industry is a variety of what we call sustainability risks – their lack of management around disease control; genetic drift from the farmed salmon to natural salmon; as well as other changes in ocean temperature, acidification and salinity.”

Steele gave the example of private equity firm Paine and Partners, which has found a way to make money off of the industry, but not from farmed salmon itself – rather from feed, fish processing and other spin-off ventures.
