Just received this from a commercial troll colleague (Good Buddy) this morning:

"Greetings from southeast Alaska. I think the high abundance prediction for returning kings is true! Many trollers had their personal best day shattered. What's scary, is the bite continues! Be ready, my friend... A wall of fish is headed your way! Eagerly anticipating to use your spoons. Snake size needlefish are around!"

Apparently the southeast Alaskan troll fleet in smack in the middle of some of The Best fishing for springs they've ever seen!
Uber Abundance!!
And in following conversations he notes they are "Very Good Sized" ranging well up into the 40's!

Most likely suggests we will see one hell of an interesting August Folks! 
Time to sharpen your hooks and make some plans methinks!!

Most would be Columbia fish would they not buddy? You guys like me who fish the Fraser and tribs shouldnt be as excited right now.

Columbia fish or not the Albion Test number are higher than I have seen for many years so if it continues it looks to be an excellent year all around for chinook

Just got back from Campbell River, based on what guides were telling me they are having the best year in over 25 years. Each day we limited out on Springs over 15lb within 2 hours. Not sure where all those fish heading out to but surely the numbers are strong.

The Columbia river fish make up a large portion of the Chinook fish caught on the West coast of VI.

I posted Albion numbers in another post:

Chinook numbers in the Fraser are huge right now according to the Albion test fishery.

June 7 to July 7 2013 = 44 adult Chinook
June 7 to July 7 2014 = 358 adult Chinook

Why are they columbia river fish mostly?

The fish the Ladz are catching in Alaska have been determined to be of largely "Southern Origin". Some will be Fraser fish, and some will be WCVI fish, but methinks the majority are most likely US origin. And as they are still catching them (IN Alaska), it should come as little surprise they aren't showing in BC rivers as of yet (early for most anyway).

I will not be at all surprised should many Canadian returns come NO-WHERE near what they should / could be. They haven't for years under our current form of Political Mismanagement.  Good News on the Albion Test numbers on the other hand might mean a few are surviving under that...

The US on the other had has witnessed increasing returns for the past several years, and are once again on track to near or top historic records again this season. Gotta Thank them for that, for without them, our saltwater fisheries would SUCK BIG TIME!

Columbia & related river counts were and are tracking along as they should - indicating this year will witness a very large return. Not much longer and methinks our offshore areas will be SHINING as the Big Schools wander by on their way South...

There has been a rather strong divergence of both Fraser & US bound fish through the inside since late April. With that water warming, and the algae bloom "outside" dwindling down, I do not expect that will last much longer. ENJOY it while you can!!

Thanks Nog for the explanation. Its exactly as I suspected. The Americans seem to be miles ahead of us on their management of their stocks. I wish BC could take a lesson from them but of course that takes money and money they could care less to spend. They just dont see the "BIG" picture!!!!

Nog, any sign up north of the Fraser sockeye hoards we hope are coming?  The very early San Juan test fishing results are not encouraging so one wonders about the latter parts of the run that should be starting to show up Haida Gwaii way.

Would love to hear of hoards coming down as well although the San Juan number aren't all that far off the camp arable dates from 2010. No panic.

Apparently, this year's Sockeye return comes down the inside so the San Juan numbers will be lower than other year's ratios.

Nope. No-one I know of targets on those fish before they get here really. So nothing beyond speculation at this point.
My thought however is that their numbers will not reach the lofty heights being projected...

The Americans really have done a great job enhancing the Chinook runs for the Columbia & its tributaries. Those hatcheries pump out millions & millions of fry. I wonder is there is a comparison on the number between Columbia & the Fraser?
