Interesting Catch
« on: August 24, 2014, 12:22:31 PM »

Hello Folks,

Just back from a month of dark to dark fishing.
Salmon lived up to the hype around them this year, and so the catches were good.
Happy but Damn BAGGED!

Had an interesting encounter while fishing off Esperanza (WCVI - outside and west a little of Nootka).
A Salmon Shark decided to try on one of the plugs we were using for springs.
Good Sized Bugger, but just a tad on the Vicious side! When I eventually did try for the underwater shot, the Bugger SMOKED HARD to try and engulf camera and hand in one bite!!  :o

Needless to say, that is one photo that wasn't captured!!

Little Video Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIHO4wvsluo

And a couple pictures:

Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back In The Water!!  ;D

Cheers!

That's exactly where the "Interesting" part came into play!  ;)
Took quite a few minutes to wrestle the plug out of his maw, and the whole time he was chomping HARD at the gaff, the sky, my arms...  :o
Kind of understand now why the movie Jaws freaked so many people out!  ;D

Nice catch...must have been quite a shocker to see it surface! That's one of the cool things of ocean fishing: you never really know 100% of the time what you might catch!

While fishing in Kyuquot Sound last week, one of our plugs for Springs caught a 6ft blue shark and we also had a 250+ pound sunfish surface beside our boat.    There are so many interesting things swiming in our waters, that probably 99% british columbians don't even know exist

LOL! That thought DID cross my mind several times.
BUT... That plug was catching springs like nobody's business, and I wasn't going to let some arrogant toothy bugger swim off with it regardless of how feisty he was! Killer Plugs are hard to find!  ;)

I'd suggest attaching your camera to a telescopic monopod.  They are cheap and would have made for some pretty cool underwater footage.

Great pics!

What a beast!

Now that's a fish story for the ages.  I'm sure it will 'get bigger' over time...

What an experience.

A little more intel on these Beasties...

Salmon Sharks can attain 900 pounds in weight!  :o
This one was only 5 feet, and pushing 300 pounds.
Still FAR to big to wrestle aboard!

These are one of the very few Warm Blooded sharks in existence. That allows them to range much farther north than the vast majority of their toothy kin.

Interesting documentary from Alaskan Waters for any who might be interested:

1. you need to stop casting in your back yard
2. you can walk AROUND your pool.
