help with new reel drag
« on: December 12, 2014, 08:30:25 AM »

Hi i just picked up a used sage reel on ebay.

The reel seems to be in good condition however as i tighten the drag, not only does the line paying out have more drag but so does retrieving the line winding the handle.  Is this normal ?

I wind left handed and the reel seems to be set that way, how would i change from left or right hand and would this effect my drag problem?

many thanks colin

It doesn't sound normal. What model is it?

Here's the link to change retrieve: http://www.sageflyfish.com/about/faq/#faq17

Sage unconditionally backs their products. Take it to Michael and Young if you can't figure this out.

kinda sounds like you may need to replace parts of the drag. Never leave your drag reels stored with the drags turned up as this damages the drag discs and can cause several issues.

Which model and was the drag cranked on when you received the reel, is there anything stuck between the spool and the reel cage ?

Only reels I know of where the tension is the same both directions are some click/pawl type reels (speyco for example)

Thanks Guys.

Its the sage 6080.

The spool seems to come on and off fine. I don't have the tool to dismantle the drag so i will take it into M&Y. I will let you know how i get on.

sounds more like a clutch problem. If you bought this from a dealer let them know it arrived defective also let ebay know. If you paid via Paypal let them know the transaction was not satisfactorily completed due to a defect in the product. Unless it was advertised as having such an issue they should take the reel back and issue you a refund or an identical item. The one or 2 times I had an issue with anything I bought off ebay the seller responded right away by replacing the item not even asking for the original back.

Took the reel into the good guys at M&Y Fly shop in Vancouver and they had the tool to remove the drag cover, only to find the bearing stuck on solid. I did ask the seller if the reel had any problem but he said it was good. thanks for all you help.

Sounds like your seller may need to offer you a discount refund for the price of repair cost. He obviously did the damage to the reel by user negligence.

I know when I sell something I make damn sure it works perfectly before I list it for sale

It happened to me as well.  Bought one Loop etech reel 7/9 on line.  Good thing I met seller in person.  Realized the problem after the money and reel exchange hand and the seller has no problem to take it back.  The bearing or drag clutch issue.  And you need to send back to manufacture to get a new part in for a fix.
