Fish finder. What do you recommend
« on: April 26, 2015, 06:32:41 PM »

Need opinions on a fish finder. Thinking I'll get one with GPS. Budget up to $500ish. Will be used for crabbing salmon fishing and lower fraser for sturgeon.  Any help would be appreciated.

This may give you an idea of what specs you should be looking at when shopping for a new unit:

Take a look at the Lowrance products.

Elite 5 CHIRP looks like their latest product in your price range ($500 on Amazon.ca).
The mid- to high-end Lowrance products have something called "Down-scan" (or side-scan).
This provides a "photo-like" image of the bottom - may be able to sturgeon.

I have an Elite 4X that I bought just for sturgeon fishing.
Having said that, I haven't had a chance to try it yet for sturgeon fishing.

A friend has (last model) Ray Marine Dragonfly and loves it.  I've been checking Lowrance vs. Dragonfly myself..... the display on the Dragonfly looks pretty cool.....

the pro version also has GPS and dual channel CHIRP as well as the wi-fish app that hooks up to your cell phone or tablet (great for others in the boat if they wanna see what's going on too!) that records etc.... also cool!

Was at wholesale yesterday, and they just got the hummingbird helix 5 with down imaging.  Looked good too. So far it's between that and the lowrance elite 5 chirp
