8wt fly rod and reel
« on: October 13, 2015, 02:04:57 PM »

I am looking into getting a new 8 wt fly rod and reel setup to target chum and coho. I used a 8wt crosswater setup last year and wanted to upgrade a bit. I am looking to keep it under $300 - $350.

Not a lot of wiggle room at $300-$350 woth the way the dollar is now.

May I suggest looking at a used set up?

I've never caught fish with it, practiced with it twice, and am a beginner so take this for what it's worth..but I just bought a Redington Vapen Black 8 wt. Feels awesome for a fast action rod. It's $350 US (Stillwater Fly Shop in Oregon will give you free...top shelf lines..with purchase.

The warranty is good.

I got mine from Wholesale for $379 last month. They must've priced it before the dollar went down because they're around $450-500 even if local shops can order in (I checked at SeaRun...backordered for awhile).

I paired it with a Cabelas Wild River reel. It was on sale for $23 Cdn. The drag seems fine, arbor is big.

Dont cheap out on a  reel for an 8wt set up.  Unlike trout, the drag actually matters as you want one with low start up inertia and stopping power if you need it.  Now that doesn't mean you need a disc drag, but a $30 reel wont do it.

I suggest looking at the lamson liquid or the sage 2280

Bought a Lamson Liquid this year from M&Y came with 2 spare spools and a carrying case. Awesome reel that has preformed well for  Chinooks, Chums and Cohos

i have the same lamson liquid reel and two spare spools. best value for the money imho
nice good sealed drag.
ive used it in the salt several times for pinks, and the extra spools came in more handy than i imagined.
