Guys and Gals and a special shout out to Rod....

I am 55 years old and got into fishing in my mid 20's. Never learned how to fish properly (ethically?)

Let me explain......

I learned Salmon fishing on the Vedder "bottom bouncing" with fairly long leaders (at least 36").

So after spending some time reading on this forum and various articles I realised... I was one of "THOSE" guys. Yeah I'll admit it I WAS A FLOSSER!!!

Anyone who knows me knows I am the guy who will spend 20 minutes after fishing to cleanup area I have fished at to leave it better than I found it. That I release almost every fish I catch unless I am actually going to eat it.

I wanted to be better at fishing

So I thank all of you who take the time to provide guys like me with an education on fishing

This past week I caught Springs, Chum and yes, a nice hatchery Coho... All on a short float with with Wool, or Roe or single eggs. Even caught one on a Jig!!

Every fish I caught was in the MOUTH!! Imagine that!! Not a single foul hook.

I can't tell you how good it feels. So thank you to all!!

Now I just need to learn more about reading the river, Water clarity and on and on 

I will do my best to share with others who are learning to fish.

One thing I ask of anyone going fishing....Please pay it back,,, Take a bag with you and spend 15 minutes of your time while having your smoke or cold beverage to cleanup some of the junk left behind by others. maybe one day it won't be necessary but hell I felt pretty good after doing it.

And I still am whenever sockeye is open for retention on the Fraser.

I remember the first trip I took to the mouth of the Harrison to toss spoons 15 years ago.
We were fishing from a jet boat and I looked at the depth of water and said "wtf, there's no way we can snag chum using a spoon here".

I had no idea that chum would actually bite. Previously I had only inadvertently snagged zombie chum when fishing for coho on the Vedder.
Sounds reallly dumb now.

Next year is the big year and with decent Chum and Coho returns this year, ocean conditions must have been good for the last 2 or 3 years.

would be Great to see Chris. Sockeye will NOT be open next year, 2018 will be the dominant run year. Hopefully DFO will finally bring in a leader length restriction.

It is a meat harvest, plain and simple and in that case only the most efficient harvest mechanism should be used.
Gill nets are the most efficient harvest mechanism.
It is exactly why each person doesn't own and butcher their own cattle. Buy your sockeye from a commie.

of course if you have ever accidentally snagged a salmon by the tail you probably have never fought that hard in your life to bring in a fish!!

No one should see an opening for sockeye on the Fraser.

Apples to oranges. Sockeye are wild, cattle is farmed. Following your logic, we should just buy farmed salmon.

Incidentally, there are many who harvest and butcher their own ruminants and shoot their own fowl, Chris included.
Why would there be a different standard for wild salmon (conservation concerns excluded)?

Anyhow thought I had the itch out of me with  4 days on the river but I have a couple more coming Mon and Tuesday and damn if that itch isn't flaring up again.

Congratulations! In addition to it's other demerits, flossing is a very limited way to fish. By adding another method or technique to your skill base you've become a far better angler. It's a lesson some who chuck roe 95% of the time could learn. Haw Haw Haw!
