Are there any whales around?
« on: October 21, 2016, 04:30:38 PM »

Are there any Hump or Orca whales close to Vancouver?

We want to go out on the 24th or 25th Oct, to do some whale watching (sightseeing tour), but if they are not around then we would rather do some fishing instead (charter).

Just checking if anyone has spotted whales during the last few days.

Thank you

Orcas are fairly common but it's seasonal - mostly associated with salmon migrations. There are so called transient orcas that move through year round hunting seals. There are other marine mammals - dolphins are not uncommon near Vancouver and Howe Sound - great whales are less common but do show up. I saw a gray whale near Horseshoe Bay a few years back. There are whale watching tours operated out of Steveston, Vancouver Harbour and Horseshoe Bay.

I saw a calf orca at Crescent beach two weeks ago.  No BS.
