Was fishing down there today. From parking on the road it's a walk through a large clear area with a very old well (now filled with dirt). I really wondered what it used to be? Old military base camp? Tiny bits of history there, old man made rock fences mostly grown over?  Anyone know?

sounds like you were at the prison run which obviously used to be a prison until it was shut down. the buildings were still there just  a few years ago until they were all removed

We were looking for Prison, and thought this was it based on paved road in, blocked by a cement barrier at the road. Large open area. Maybe Prison,  maybe Thurston Meadows?

I was told that at the fort Apache fishing spot there was a bridge where Ed Alison brought giant logs across the River.
Am I wrong? This is at the top at Alison Canyon I believe

I believe you are correct, but I have not fished there in about 15 years. Around that time, spray-painted on the upper rock face at the top end of the Alison Pools, on the back opposite of the road, were the words "Fort Apache Beaks"....so apparently at least one other felt that was section was called "Fort Apache.
Haven't been there for well over a decade so I am not sure if it is still there.

Having fished for steelhead over 25+ years, I can confirm that Fort Apache is just above the Alison pools and on the opposite side of the road with sharp rocky cliff overhanging. Used to be awesome spot for steelhead in the morning as there was some deep and calm holding water underneath the cliff. It wasn't much water to cover and so it is not a gong show spot as it can't handle more than a rod or two to cover the fishable water.
