Hit the river at 7 am. Parked up near the hatchery and worked my way down river spending some time fishing each pool along the way. Halfway between the hatchery and Ranger Run I took a quick look at a spot I was thinking of fishing but decided against it as the wasn't good access to the good water...but oh looky there's a float...score freebie!, oh and another...and another...and another...seems with the current they were all washing up in the rocks at the same place. Ended up with 30 or so new floats.
Got down to Ranger Run, 5 guys fishing no luck other than the odd Sockeye. One of the guys was mentioning some guy who was complaining everyone was taking his spot and he had to fish the tailout and ended up being the only one to land a Spring that day (Tuesday, DK?). Fished for a bit and caught and released a pristine little rainbow of about 12".
Headed back up to where I parked. Yak offs on the river have a 100 lb aggressive Rottweiler leashed up right on the trail opposite the river. Well guess where fishermen look when walking the river, at the river. Ended up walking right into this dog which proceeded to come at me, only way away from him was toward the river so I end up taking a big spill on the rip rap. Owner just glances at me, told him to put the damn thing on a shorter leash, I didn't even get an apology never mind an agknowledgement of my comment. Felt like giving him a good whack upside the head with my rod.
Finally back to where I had parked I drove down to Tahimi bridge. Either the Sock run is coming to an end on the Vedder or the nets in the river this week took their toll, only 3 socks holding water where there are usually 15-20 at a time. Saw one nice big chrome spring holding water there too, he turned his side to me and gave me a real good look...easily 25-30 lb. Spent some time offering him my hook but he wasn't accepting of the notion of being caught.
Back was bugging me so called it a day early. Can't complain though, the $50 of floats made the trip worthwhile at the very least.
