Anglers number remain steady for 20 year,
hatchery fish stock down to 30% while wild fish stock down to 50-60%.
Average catching is 8 - 10 fish for successful anglers. I am slightly below average.

These numbers are based on the annual angler questionnaire, and we all know all anglers but me are liars   I recall seeing one for the Vedder a while back saying anglers landed 14,000 steelhead one season; BC Outdoors is still using that number in their annual fishing guide.

You don't believe 44,000 catch and release a year? Maybe the steelhead smolt is also included. But there are quite a few anglers catch over 100 fish in a season.

Can't speak for bigsnag but I don't think 44,000 steelhead are caught and released annually and, there are no numbers for the juvenile harvest.

The report at the link below is not the easiest read but the following excerpt from the executive summary says that the reported numbers of fish released are about double the actual number released as verified through field surveys.

"Comparisons from the province-wide dataset show mean upward discrepancy for SHA estimates relative to field results of 42% for number of anglers, 58% for angler days, 83% for retained catch and 109% for released catch."

The report was conducted in 1999. The data in this post is since 1999. Will anglers' integrity improve over time?

The survey is highly biased. People who report over report their catch. Unsuccessful anglers or those who didn't fish are more likely not to report.

AFAIK the published numbers are reduced from the original tabulation by a third or more.

NVM. Just realized it's on the back of the Angler Questionnaire.

As an aside they should implement a way to be able to report the data online.

How hard is it to simply fill it out and send it back. Put your ego to the side for second. Especially if it's a resource you enjoy using. Mailed mine back today.

The money spent on mail outs could be put to better uses perhaps? They have most of our email addresses and I’m pretty sure a mass mail out would be a lot cheaper if it is email. I filled mine out two days ago and haven’t mailed it yet. Each day reduces the likelihood of it getting to the mailbox. No ego involved.
