Alaska fishing
« on: June 11, 2019, 02:14:39 PM »

Since we have no salmon fishing here, I thought I would post a couple of articles from the Anchorage paper on fishing there.

This one is pretty short:
https://www.adn.com/outdoors-adventure/fishing/2019/06/10/fishing-expected-to-be-good-when-russian-river-opens-at-midnight/
Sounds like the return is good for that river.

This one is pretty interesting as it outlines the gear used in the "snaggery":
https://www.adn.com/outdoors-adventure/fishing/2019/06/11/working-the-night-shift-snagging-salmon-in-seward-with-the-overnight-diehards/

Keep in mind that they harvest salmon with dip nets in some rivers.

This article talks about funds for fisherman affected by the small pink return in 2016.
https://www.adn.com/business-economy/2019/06/11/feds-delay-release-of-56m-in-disaster-funds-stemming-from-bleak-2016-pink-salmon-run/

Quite different from the way things are handled here.

Easywater, thanks for the links to the articles.  Will be heading up to the Russian river/Kenai confluence June 22nd for 3 days of fishing. Returns are really strong the first few days this year. Hope it keeps up. It's 'combat' fishing in most areas, even more crowded than the Vedder! But everyone gets along mostly and huddle when the bears approach...

Meh, they keep old boots for the campfire like some people do here as well. Not too far different.

And I pulled one of these out of the back of a nice Coho that I caught at the mouth of the Cap. I kept that as a momento for the longest time.

Nope - I don't see too much difference at all
