Stave river steelhead updates?
« on: January 28, 2021, 02:38:18 PM »

Hi fellow anglers,

Im a newbie here, apologies if this thread does not belong here.
Just posting this to see how stave river fares with steelhead fishing? Any current updates? Im thinking to go this weekend but can only make one trip so I wanted to make it count, its either vedder or stave. I have never caught a steelhead before - i do have the license n conservation stamp

If i dont have any luck with steelhead, might switch it up to target mountain whitefish

The Vedder has a bigger run of steelheads than the Stave.

I prefer the Chedder over the Stave for Steel.....

I rarely ever seem to hook into Steel so i typically just stop at Abby Costco on the way home and pick up some Steel from the deli / meat section and cook it once i get home.     Tell the Mrs Sumas River that it was a hatch. and it took great cunning from me to scout it, entice it to bite and then land if after a fierce epic battle......

No idea. Best I know it tends to be better a little later in the season...that said I have caught them there as early Dec 30th

By which, of course, you are referring to the checkout line-up.

The Stave had a really popular spot about 5 years ago. It ended up getting filled in and not a lot of Steel gets caught there any more. 8+ years ago I would backtroll plugs in front of the damn and pick up a few but that river is best fished from a boat. You can can access so many good spots with a boat. I'd stick to the Vedder to be honest.

I've only had luck with steelhead on the Stave later in the season.

Vedder would be my vote as well. Way more terrain to cover and I was there a couple days ago and the water conditions were good, no fish however... for me or anyone out there as far as I saw, not even a by-catch  :P But if you get in there before the rain that's coming you could have some luck!

An update - I went vedder this morning, it was raining and cold but I still enjoyed being out. Not one bite and didnt see anyone else around the spot so dont know if anyone did catch.
