Milner Bushing Reel
« on: March 18, 2021, 05:18:43 PM »

G Day All. I was wondering if anyone has had the center cap off on a Milner bushing reel? Apparently there is a small spring in the release catch. Mine is broken and won't hold the reel onto the backing plate anymore. I phoned John and waiting to see if he has a spring for it. Don't want to take it apart if there's nothing i can"t fix. Had my baitcaster out today and I'm missing my Milner a whole bunch already. LOL

That spring is very easy to replace, john should be able to send you replacement part. His replies are quite delayed so expect some time. Took me like a month for him to reply for my replacement clicker part. Are you certain it is broken? You might get away with bending it back, its just a tiny v shaped metal rod. But for installation, just put every piece back except the spring when screwing the cap back. You have to push that in from the slot so it goes in between. I think that's how it is suppose to go back in. I couldn't get it in properly until i did it that way.

I took it apart and had a look. Bent the little wire outward for added resistance but i think the wire is to weak. It just won't hold it's form with any sort of resistance. Such simplicity yet so frustrating! LOL

Try heating the spring up in the oven. I forget what temp, it may harden it. Normally heating stainless rod gives it a springy effect. Again at your own discretion, something to attempt while you wait for a new spring lol.

While trying to expand the wire for a little more tension the wire broke. It's back to the drawing board for now. :)
Just my bad luck. I haven't heard of other's having this problem.
Problem solved!! I used a small snap swivel that i cut down to size with side cutter's. Work's perfectly with nice tension and best of all an easy fix, down the road again if  the wire gets weak!

Nice, that's one way to go at it. Readily available too lol, I'll remember your experiment! Metal do break when past the point of bend tension in opposite way. Normally these spring last a great deal of time, if u think how long silex been around. It's not really a common problem, you should inspect if your spindle pin is bent or spool is wobblying. Something added more tension on the spring more than normal. Unless you have been pushing the spool without having it in the unlock position. That would really speed up the unnecessary pressure on the spring and lever.

I always push lever into unlock position before putting spool back onto backing plate. This was just a case of crap luck, which I seem to get a lot of. Reel spin's perfectly, no wobble at all. Goes to say that if you stare at your fishing desk long enough something will come to mind. LOL
I'm " HAPPY CAMPER" again! Have my reel up n working again!
Thanks for the input!

you may want to test cast it before hitting the river.  I once changed a spring out on a center pin and when making a big cast, the force of the reel back spinning caused the spring to lose tension and the spool would fly off.
I couldn't make it happen when doing the standard spin the reel in your hand.

Be a pain in the rear to make it to the river to have that happen and your spool to fall onto a rock.

Had it out and no problems at all. Work's just fine. With this bushing reel it's either locked into place or it's not. As long as there's tension on the spool release lever it can't come off.
