Harbinger of Autumn
« on: September 07, 2022, 10:44:05 AM »

For me the first September cutthroat signals the coming fall season. Given the right conditions; cooler nights, some rain within the last few days and an overcast day or even mixed sun and cloud usually have me on a local stream in the first week of the month. Yesterday wasn't perfect ( I was on the water by 7am) but I found a few fish including this nice 14 or 15 inch cutty who chased my fly in a big swirl on the first retrieve and then took it on the 2nd. I also landed a couple in 10 to 11 inch range and lost another. As the water was very low I got a good look at river structure for the weeks ahead. Following the big November flood and other big rainfall event i can see many of the better holes have filled in. Small bait fish, usually abundant in this stretch were pretty sparse. the 6 week drought has had an effect.
