Nahatlatch River slide captured on video
« on: August 14, 2024, 09:05:03 AM »

A substantial mudslide into the Nahatlatch has been captured on video:

https://youtu.be/4N2YoKcrIp8

Appears this was the result of a blockage on a small tributary. The slide temporarily blocked the  Nahatlatch but raised it by 10 feet before the blockage was breached. It would not be a good thing to be downstream of such an event. The sudden increase in river levels could easily have fatal consequences.

I know less then nothing about a lot of things and my question is:

the trees that fell into the water were just natural forest debris or cut logs? Some of them look pretty uniform.

Was this slide due to any man-made negligence?

The massive Kookipi fire in the Nahatlach lakes area causing unstable ground then a torrential downpour causing a landslide. Same thing happened on the Chilcotin river. Global warming causing very hot dry weather resulting in severe drought and extreme forest fires. Going to be more natural disasters in our future unfortunately.

mud slides are going to become a very common issue all over BC after all the fires. One only has too look at the small slides that happened between Lytton and Spence's Bridge in the few years since the big fire. Anywhere with steeper terrain will potentially have a problem when heavy rains happen.

Not fishing related but in this video a pair of guys do a motor bike tour of the upper Lillooet River, Hurley Valley & Meager Creek areas including site of the 2010 landslide. Landslide and fire damage is obvious as is smoke from nearby fires. With  the last several years of hot summers, fires and past bad logging practices areas with inherently unstable slopes are being seriously impacted by slides. The Upper Lillooet was once known as a pretty good stream for chinook spawning and rearing. Not anymore. Many of the access roads are closed as the area is deemed unsafe.

The rumbling and cracking noise before the slide hits is terrifying...

Just read a news article about a massive log jam on a creek into Kooteney lake that has the potential to cause a lot of damage if it releases. Where did all these logs come from ??
