Winter steelhead guides VI
« on: December 02, 2024, 12:33:05 PM »

Hey all, I'm looking for recommendations on a guide for a couple days on the island. I'm looking for recommendations on river and guide. If those come with stories of your past experiences that would be phenomenal! I'm not necessarily looking for a lodge as im perfectly ok with motels. I feel motels would potentially give me the opportunity to do different rivers with different guides each day. ( as preferably from drift boat)

You could try the Stamp river for winter steelhead and contact Murphy Sportsfishing who use jet boats on the river. The Cowichan river for Winter steelhead or Brown trout out of a drifboat with the Gunns of Riverquest Charters is ton of fun as well. For more remote trips I would contact Daniel of Coastal Trail Fishing company based out of Comox Vancouver Island.

My most recent trip to VI to fish the Stamp was with Murphy's.  Our guide Curtis was great and got us onto some fish.  The water was clear with a green tint but was quite low due to unusually low precipitation since Christmas.  We were fishing from Curtis's jet sled and some of the bouldery sections of the river were quite shallow, with our sled making contact several times both coming down and going up.  It's the price you have to pay for fishing that river.  We stayed at an AirBnB for quite a reasonable rate and were very close to the orange bridge, making the drive to the upper river a little more than 15 minutes.

Both Curtis and Kevin are solid guides.  I've also fished with Nick at West Coast River Charters and he too is very fishy.  Both have jet sleds and I don't think that Murphy's has a drift boat but I believe Nick does.  Lastly, there are quite a few spots that you can walk into and fish from shore along that stretch of the river.  There is a well documented fisherman's trail that is accessible from Beaver Creak Rd. and if your feeling adventurous you can hike into.

I've booked a trip through Murphys for the middle of February. And hopefully my friend has a good time. He has come out with me many times for steelhead but unfortunately has never hooked into one. I may look into doing some non guided stuff the following day but we will see how we are feeling day of.
