sept 12 fraser river sturgeon report
« on: September 13, 2004, 11:01:21 AM »

Well myself and a friend decided to go out on sunday to target some sturgeon in the dewdney to hatzic area.  We arived at our first spot around 10:30 am droped anchor and were fishing by 1o:45am. A couple minutes went by when i had a taping on miy rod must be a sturgeon so i picked up my rod the taping continued then a steady pulling so i set the hook only to learn i forgot to tighten my drag i missed the first fish (you idiot). Minutes later buddies rod starts to tap but he made no mistake his tension was tourqed and he sets the hook but no resistence so as he goes to put it back in the holder a 3 1/2 footer leaps through the air with his line in it's mouth the battle's on 10 min went by and we release this fish two nice runs and two spectacular jumps. These fish are fighting harder than a month or two ago should be a fun fall. Buddie gets his bait freshend up tosses it out 5 min go by and my rod starts again this time my drag is set and so is the hook fish on a 2 1/2  foot sturgeon which also puts up a good scrap one nice jump and then dove to the bottom stayed there till he was tiered then up to the top for  release. We stayed in this spot for about another hour when i decided no bites time to move. So we tried moving down river to lower end of hatzic hole tried for about 45 min nothing. The last time i was out i seen an 8 1/2 footer taken up by the mouth of the veddar so we pulled up the anchor and headed up to the exact spot where the 8 1/2 footer was taken. We toss our anchor and begin to fish i notice our weights are't holding the water is to quick so i winch in put on a 20 ounce to see if we can fish this flow but to much flow . So we decided to move up out of the fast water we attempted to pull the anchor but it was lodged on somthing so i try to free it up with the boat but not a chance so icut my losses and the anchor rope and called it a day. Correct me if im wrong i thought the fraser was closed to salmon fishing till OCT 11 there were people fishing for salmon all over the river and they were in the main stream fraser not the sumas veddar canal.

What type of bait were you using? Fresh or frozen....

We were using fresh spring roe which was frozen for a week so you could say it was freshly frozen.

Yes, Legend the river is closed to salmon fishing, there were 10 - 12 boats out by the mouth of the vedder and up along strawberry island, they were all sturgeon fishing.  Just curious, if a 3 food sturgeon can hold on the bottom till it is tires, what kind of gear are you using, and if a 3 footer can do that, what are you going to do when you hook a 6 or 7 footer, because it is bound to happen, sturgeon fishing is going to turn on soon, if the river ever stabilizes.........

Roeman im using all the proper gear and i have hooked some 6 footers on it landed them to. There were several boats fishing around the veddar  sumas mouth in the mainstream fraser that were not fishing for sturgeon unless you know a way to troll for sturgeon.

There are the stadard white triangle boundary markers on each side of the mouth.
No, Legend I do not have a mehtod of trolling for sturgeon.  As far as the gear for sturgeon, maybe the gear I use is a little over kill for smaller fish, but I use a 320 penn with 80 tuff and 72 leader, been close to getting spooled even with that, I can't imagine using anything less..
