sturgeon fishing oct 15
« on: October 15, 2004, 11:18:39 PM »

Was fortunate enough to be part of the Rick Hansen/Sturgeon Society Derby today and guess who caught the biggest fish  ;D ;D ;D.  229 cms or about 7ft 4 inches.  Took me almost 1/2 hour, not a long fight but probably my toughest ever with any fish.  Near the end my arms hurt so much I wanted to quit but the fish finally co-operated.  In total our boat landed 11 fish most of them about 4 to 5 feet long.  For anybody that hasn't tried sturgeon fishing before,  go hire a guide.  I guarantee you will have a blast!!

Is that what the hell was going on, I drove over the Mission bridge this afternoon and there were 8 boats spread across the Fraser in a straight line right across.

Well done Doug. Rick and the Sturgeon Conservation Society certainly do a lot of good work in working to preserve these great fish and provide fishing opportunities for them.

People come from all over the world to catch these monsters, like you did today. ;D

Not only monsters, but plenty of young 'uns too.  I was in a different derby for 6 hours today and with 4 rods fishing, our boat landed 23 sturgeon.  Biggest was 186 cm.  About 4 or 5 of them were over 5 feet.  We caught so many that our guide ran out of tags!  Total length of fish was over 19 metres.   ;D

We had constant action for the whole 6 hours - I would say the longest time between bites/fish was 5 minutes tops.  They were jumping and finning all over the place.  It sure is good to see a stock that appears to be in good shape like that.
