Oct.16 Vedder Report
« on: October 16, 2004, 04:58:52 PM »

All the rain last night brought the river up about 8 to 10 inches and had some colour in it but is quite fishable at the moment but if we get more rain tonight it will colour up quickly.

I had planned to go to the scene of yesterday's crime, MP but I knew all the rain we had would not enable me to cross the river so slept in. Besides I was tired from landing all those fish yesterday. ;D ;D

After breakfast at the Point spent part of the day touring the river and was there a lot of people out there, typical for a weekend of course. Besides a derby was being held put on by Hub Sports and The Abbotsford Pilots Jr.B Hockey team.

My first stop after breakfast was at the Limit Hole where a Conservation Officer I know was just going down to check the anglers there. Visted with him for a bit and talked about a number of fishing issues. I did not go down with him to see if he picked up anyone for any infractions.

I then stopped at the Chilliwack River Hatchery and marvelled at the amount of good sized CO's there. The channel and the holding pond was chalked full. It made me wonder why I did not catch some of these early run fish, too many non biters I guess.

I understand there may not be as many fish coming back in a few years as FOC is cutting their egg take for CO's and chinook this year as a Federal Government cost saving measure.  ::) ??? Does not make sense to me as the money this hatchery generates both in the ocean and the Chilliwack/Vedder is tremendous. Thats government for you.

After leaving the hatchery stopped to try a spot above Wilson Road but had left everything but my rod and roe at home, as I was in a rush to get away so not to be stuck with more home renovations, no sissors to even cut the bait. Besides did not like the colour of the water at that time however it cleared up as the day went on though.

Next stop Lickman Road, not much happening but lots of anglers fishing 2 feet apart, :D saw a chap with a nice CO though. ;D

Next stop down towards the BC Hydro Bridge, ran into Ernie who had been fishing all morning and reported he had landed 2 chum, 2 steelhad smolts and 2 bullheads. ;D Then met Nicole just coming in to fish the pond there with her fly gear. We had a nice visit taking about more fishing issues including all the snagging and unsportsmanlike fishing we have seen this year. :(

Knowing she wanted to get on with her fishing trip I left her to get her gear ready and headed to turn around at the bridge.

On the way back saw a fellow land a coloured chum that was hooked in the back. I could not believe it when he dispatched it with a rock. Was going to jump out of the truck to tell him of his illegal act but a car as behind me so I continued on. A poor excuse I know but I get sick of telling anglers of their poor ethics.

Stopped here at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve to type this as my computer is still out of action.

Hope the rain holds off tomorrow for those heading out as there may be some CO's around, here hopes so as the season does not have too much time left unless the fish are late. However with the amount in the hatchery that I saw today I donot really think so, time will tell but I am glad I got those ones yesterday at M.Pool. ;D ;D

Was out today myself. Fishing with jigs I got three coho on, just one to the beach. After the first light bite I switched to roe and caught a lot of spring jacks, springs, and one chum. Nice day.

Hooked into numerous springs today, but couldn't land a fish if my life depended on it. Wasnt going to keep any, but it feels good to have one released from shore.

I had a pretty similar day to you Chris. The water came up a little so i couldn't get into my usual spot. Took a look around the hatchery and saw it was loaded with coho. I explored a little in the mid and upper river. All we had to show from our work was a brief hookup with a coho for me and my brother and a spring for our other partner. On my way back home I stopped and looked at my spot again only to discover that it was now occupied by a float flosser. At least he was having succes, so looks good for my next trip.

P.S. bug pumper after looking at your pic I realized we ran into you today shortly after you caught that fish

End of the month or shortly after the next big rain, only a guess though.
